California Democrats strongly rebuked President Donald J. Trump for failing to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin over Russian interference in U.S. elections, which Putin denies.
“President Trump’s performance today was the most damaging and shameful surrender of American values and interests in modern history,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) said. “And in their silence, Republican members of Congress are complicit in this betrayal of American interests.”
Several congressional Republicans did criticize the president, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said in a statement that “there is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues to undermine our democracy here and around the world.”
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) called Trump’s performance at the meeting “utterly shameful.”
“We watched a U.S. president offer total deference to a hostile foreign power while attacking U.S. institutions,” Lieu said. “By refusing to admit that Russia attacked our democracy, or that Russia did anything wrong whatsoever, Trump is regurgitating the Kremlin’s talking points.”
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) criticized Trump for rejecting U.S. intelligence that concludes Russia interfered in U.S. elections.
“President Trump has to stop kowtowing to Vladimir Putin, and his Republican allies in Washington have to stand up and say enough is enough,” Feinstein said. “Whatever the reason behind President Trump’s cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin, it needs to stop. The president’s actions are undermining our national security.”
