Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s Sound Investment commissioning program, which was established to engage audiences in developing new music, features Los Angeles-based Sarah Gibson as its 2018-19 Sound Investment composer. Gibson is the latest in a long list of esteemed LACO Sound Investment composers, among them Ellen Reid, Matthew Aucoin, Ted Hearne, Hannah Lash, Andrew Norman, Timo Andres and Derek Bermel. The first Sound Investment commission occurred in 2001.

Sound Investment members have a rare opportunity to observe the development of a new work from the composer’s earliest ideas to finished composition. The program’s intimate salons throughout the season feature behind-the-scenes discussions with the composer about the creative process, unique reading sessions of the work-in-progress and tickets to the work’s premiere, among other benefits.

Members of Sound Investment receive access for two guests at three salon events with Gibson, beginning Monday, June 4, at 7 p.m. in Beverly Hills; Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District; and Jan. 24, 2019, at a location to be announced. Membership is $300 and also includes a pair of tickets to Gibson’s world premiere, and the donor’s name listed on the dedication page of the printed score. A $500 Sound Investment Plus Membership additionally includes access for two to a special reading session of the work in progress with the orchestra on Thursday, Oct. 25, in downtown Los Angeles and a signed copy of the printed score.

“Sound Investment began in 2001 with the innovative idea that LACO audiences would be interested in taking a journey with a composer, getting to know him or her and seeing how a new work comes together,” said LACO Executive Director Scott Harrison. “Back in a day, when the term ‘crowdsource’ didn’t exist, Sound Investment became a way for a group of people to create a legacy in music.”

College students ages 17 to 30 who take advantage the orchestra’s “Campus to Concert Hall All Access Pass,” which provides admission to all LACO concerts during the season for $30, are invited to all three salons in June, December and January.
