Kunath’s exhibit incorporates work inspired by the center’s students. It was designed as part of West Hollywood’s Urban Art Program.
“We are very excited about it,” said Jessica Weiss Levin, director of communications for the Center For Early Education. “It was part of a new building project and we wanted to make sure the students were involved.”
The work creates a striking visual along La Cienega Boulevard. It uses styrofoam, aqua resin, gesso, glass, acrylic and latex paint, and neon glass bulbs to portray the dream-like state between sleep and awakening. The sculptural elements include a bird wearing shoes and a large hand holding a rainbow. The objects seem to belong anywhere and nowhere at the same time, Levin said. Emojis were inspired by students like an “otter playing with a tennis ball” or “cloud with a cloud beard.” The students also voted on which ones would be included.
Kunath will be at the unveiling for “Wake Up and Dream” along with West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman, members of the city’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and the school community.
Kunath’s work is in permanent collections around the world, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Hammer Museum. The artist, who was born in Germany, currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
