John Burroughs G/HG/HA Magnet has been named a National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America. John Burroughs Middle School has been located in Hancock Park since 1924 and attracts students from throughout Los Angeles. The student population reflects the cultural and socio-economic diversity of the city.

Magnet students participate in a vibrant, high-achieving learning community that prepares them for high school, college and careers. Burroughs’ magnet students engage in a rigorous learning environment and participate in an enriched curriculum offering theater, orchestra, robotics and coding classes.

John Burroughs was also recently awarded the 2017 California Gold Ribbon Schools Award and the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award.

“We know that good is the enemy of great and we are committed to continuously improving our services to students and families,” said Principal Dr. Steve Martinez. “This award validates our ongoing efforts to work together as a community, engage parents and prepare students to be college and career ready. I would also like to give my sincere thanks to the faculty and staff of John Burroughs Middle School for their tireless work and dedication. Their efforts are what made this award possible.”

Martinez will accept the National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during Magnet Schools of America’s 36th National Conference in April in Chicago. The awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. One school of excellence will also be selected to win $5,000 and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award.
