Councilman David Ryu, 4th District, will visit Pyeongchang, in the Gangwon Province of the Republic of Korea, for the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
He departed on Feb. 7, and is scheduled to arrive in Korea on Feb. 9 and return to Los Angeles on Feb. 13.
During the trip, Ryu will meet with local officials, business owners and organizers to gain a first-hand understanding of how cities prepare and host an Olympic Games ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Ryu will look at how Pyeongchang manages infrastructure, traffic, security and fiscal stewardship.
“I am honored to have a chance to visit Pyeongchang for the Winter Olympics,” Ryu said. “I look forward to cheering on Team USA and discussing best practices with local officials for a successful and fiscally sound games.”
Ryu will meet with the governor of Gangwon Province and attend the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. With L.A. hosting the 2028 Summer Games, the trip allows an opportunity to learn from Pyeongchang’s hosting and budgeting for the Olympics.
The trip is being funded by Ryu’s officeholder account and personal funds.
