Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department are continuing their search for a 51-year-old man who disappeared in early October after visiting Hollywood.

Enrique Garibay arrived in Los Angeles for vacation on Sept. 25 and was staying at Melrose Hostel at 646 N. Western Ave. He was last seen leaving the Melrose Hostel on Oct. 5 in a rented Toyota RAV4 that he was supposed to return that day to a rental car agency near Los Angeles International Airport. Garibay never arrived, according to Det. Alma Mercado, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit.

“We have no new information, no new leads,” Mercado said. “His car is still outstanding. There have been no new sightings, nothing.”

Garibay was reported missing by family members on Oct. 9 after he did not return to Budapest. He last spoke to family members by phone on Oct. 5 when he told them he was on standby for a return flight home. Investigators are uncertain where he was when he made the call. Detectives entered the vehicle into a national stolen car database with the hope it will be found by law enforcement. The vehicle was not equipped with a tracking device.

“He has not had any contact with family, and there has been no credit card activity,” Mercado said. “The family obviously wants him home for Christmas.”

Garibay was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, and attended college in Hungary, where he met and married his wife. Family members told investigators that Garibay often travels alone, and he did not seem depressed or give them reason to believe anything was out of the ordinary. Mercado said detectives interviewed Melrose Hostel employees, who said Garibay casually spoke with them, and seemed normal and happy.

“There didn’t appear to be anything unusual,” Mercado added.

Garibay is of Mexican descent, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 190 pounds. He has brown eyes and gray hair. The missing vehicle is a gray 2017 Toyota RAV4 with the license plate number 7VGJ780.
