Melrose Elementary Math-Science-Technology Magnet will expand by five classrooms and 125 students in the 2018-2019 school year and is encouraging parents of prospective students to apply. The application period runs from October through mid-November.

With a focus on project-based learning, engineering and using technology to enhance learning, Melrose Elementary is one of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s most popular magnet schools. It typically has 450 applications for approximately 62 spaces each year.

Melrose Elementary has a one-to-one technology program and partnerships with Inner City Arts, Hollywood Arts Council and Conga Kids. The campus was recognized as a Magnet School of Distinction from the Magnet Schools of America Association for the past two years.

The school’s student body is diverse and over 14 languages are spoken on campus. Melrose Elementary holds family fun nights such as La Noche Latina and a Korean BBQ night. Students also participate in the California Young Reader Medal and Engineering Design Challenge.

Families can apply beginning in October at echoices.lausd.net. Enrollment is determined through a lottery system. Although preference is not given to families living near the school, they are encouraged to apply.
