Police cordoned off the 600 block of North Edinburgh Avenue in the Fairfax District on Wednesday after a man was allegedly making threats and may have been holding hostages barricaded himself inside a residence.
The incident began at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Edinburgh Avenue, near Melrose Avenue. A Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team was called in and a crisis negotiator attempted to contact the unidentified man. Tear gas was fired into the residence, and at approximately 2 a.m. officers entered and found the man dead, said LAPD spokeswoman Liliana Preciado. No other people were inside.
Preciado said she had no information about what prompted the situation. According to media reports, the FBI served a search warrant at the residence on Aug. 8. Inquiries to the FBI were not answered.
As the incident unfolded on Aug. 9, a woman and child came out of the residence and were ushered to safety by police, according to media reports. Residents near the location were also evacuated.
Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office spokesman Ed Winter said the man was in his 30s and the cause of death was believed to be suicide. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
