A West Hollywood resident was arrested on June 26 on suspicion of identity theft after he allegedly impersonated a registered nurse.
Jeremy Daniel Griffin was arrested by investigators with the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) after a complaint was received that he was misrepresenting himself. Griffin was scheduled to begin working as a registered nurse at Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, California on June 26.
He was hired after using the name of an authentic registered nurse, but during the hiring process, presented falsified documents in that nurse’s name to Aya Healthcare, a company that provides nurses to hospitals with staffing deficiencies. Aya Healthcare became suspicious after reviewing the documents and reported Griffin to DCA.
The defendant was interviewed by investigators last week after he arrived at the hospital for a shift. At that time, authorities learned his true identity. Griffin does not have a license as a registered nurse in California, but previously held a license as a licensed vocational nurse.
Investigators claim it is not the first time Griffin has misrepresented himself. In 2014, the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians revoked Griffin’s license because of criminal convictions for receiving stolen property and burglary.
The burglary conviction stemmed from a case in which Griffin allegedly used the identity of the same registered nurse in the Saint Louise Regional Hospital incident to gain employment at a medical facility in Marina del Rey, where he then stole property belonging to a doctor.
Griffin initially faced charges of identity theft and false personation. He later pleaded no contest to one felony count of burglary in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Supervising Investigator James Ackley said Aya Healthcare and Saint Louise Regional Hospital followed the law in conducting a background check and identifying Griffin.
Investigators believe Griffin may have also misrepresented himself at other medical facilities in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigator Rod Spaulding, with the DCA Division of Investigation’s Central Valley Field Office, at (559)244-5658.
