Music in the gardens
Head to Descanso Gardens for a picnic dinner under the oaks while listening to jazz beginning tonight, June 22. For the next seven Thursdays, music will be performed on the main lawn from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All shows are free with admission to Descanso Gardens. Lawn chairs are allowed and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Visitors can bring picnic fare exclusively during the jazz performances, or purchase dinner from Patina’s concession stand. On June 22, Dr. Bobby Rodriguez Latin Jazz performs, followed by Kathleen Grace on June 29 and Gina Saputo on July 6. Summer cooking class
The Westin Bonaventure is hosting a cooking class on Saturday, June 24 at 1 p.m. with chefs Andreas Nieto and executive chef Joseph Mills. Learn how to prepare summer watermelon and cherokee red heirloom tomato gazpacho with poached shrimp. Other dishes include American wagyu beef tornados with smoked gouda gratin, summer garden vegetables and LA Prime’s signature chimichurri. Finish with a crepe Suzette with fresh oranges, Grand Marnier ice cream and candied pecans. Must be 21 and over. Sip wine at the chef’s table while enjoying the dishes. Summer of Love wine dinner
Fleming’s is offering a special steak and wine dinner on Sunday, June 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. The four-course menu starts with tomato and burrata bruschetta with a glass of prosecco, filet mignon topped with crab and shrimp paired with Sonoma-Cutrer chardonnay, and balsamic glaze filet mignon topped with leeks and paired with a glass of Buckhorn Merlot. Katsuya Pantages package
Enjoy a discounted prix fixe dinner at Katsuya before shows at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. The dinners are $45 per person and can be shared and enjoyed before curtain time. The menu includes edamame, crispy rice with spicy tuna, Brussels sprouts, chicken teriyaki, steamed white rice, stir fried vegetables, assorted classic rolls, baked crab and vegetable roll, and classic tuna and salmon nigiri. Crossroads summer splendor
On Tuesday, June 27, enjoy a three course dinner at Crossroads prepared by special guest chefs from the Wynn Las Vegas. Crossroads chef/owner Tal Ronnen is also the Wynn Las Vegas’ culinary consulting chef. Executive chef David Walzog, of Lakeside at the Lake of Dreams at Wynn Las Vegas, creates ocean-to-table meals, while executive chef Mark LoRusso, of Costa di Mare, has seafood flown in daily from Italy’s pristine coastal waters. Wynn Las Vegas executive pastry chef Andy Jin, of Lakeside, offers decadent desserts. The three-course menu features two options for each course. Start with Ronnen’s amuse bouche of watermelon gazpacho and stuffed squash blossoms. Walzog will serve compressed hami and charentais melon salad, agretti and dried fruit, or guests may choose Ronnen’s watercress and peach salad with toasted hazelnuts, balsamic roasted cipollini onions, shiitake “bacon” and mint vinaigrette. For the next course, LoRusso will prepare potato gnocchi, or guests may order Ronnen’s corn agnolotti with coconut parmesan. Entrées include porcini crostata with vegan ricotta and radicchio marmalade salad, or soft socca crepe filled with green chick peas, sorrel, fresh beans and sweet corn sauce. Finish with Jin’s pineapple cremeux with shaved sugarloaf pineapple and topped with walnut puree and roasted carrot tuile, or a Crossroads ice cream sundae. Picnic at the Twilight Concert Series
The Santa Monica Pier will host twilight concerts every Thursday evening through Aug. 17. Summer dining at Osteria Bigoli
Chef Claudio Marchesan, of Osteria Bigoli, offers artisan pastas and Roman specialties this summer inspired by his upbringing near the Adriatic Sea. Marchesan’s love for cooking was inspired by his uncles and grandmothers, and he serves authentic “old world” Italian dishes with a new flare. Starters include veal and pork meatballs, carpaccio, grilled artichoke and grilled octopus. Bali barbecue tour
Veteran restaurateur and chef Aaron Robins, of Boneyard Bistro, will host a Bali-inspired barbecue on Wednesday, June 28. The quarterly event features Bali eight-spice braised spare ribs and Indonesia fried ramen cakes, roasted pork belly, and crispy chicken and tofu salad.
