Leica Gallery Los Angeles will present “Jim Marshall: Jazz Festival,” a collection of photographs from rock ‘n’ roll photographer Jim Marshall, through July 31.
What has remained virtually unseen until now is Marshall’s incredible jazz archive. His earliest music photos were taken in the jazz clubs he loved and frequented.
During the 1960s he photographed the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals. Newport and Monterey were the first popular music festivals, taking place during one of the most important moments in the annals of jazz.
The resulting photos reflect Marshall’s unique talent and lifelong desire to “capture the perfect moment.”
Marshall bought his first Leica in 1959 for $50 down and 12 monthly payments of $24. This purchase was the beginning of his fascination with Leica cameras, which led to his collection of 20 different Leica M bodies along with 30 or more Leica lenses with Leicavits modified to fit all of his Leica M bodies.
Every iconic photograph Marshall took was captured with his Leica camera. As Marshall once said about his work, “it’s never been just a job, it’s been my life.”
Leica Gallery Los Angeles is located at 8783 Beverly Blvd.
