Filipino food and a movie
Grand Central Market presents Filipino Food Night and a screening of the new documentary “Ulam” on Saturday, May 20 at the Million Dollar Theater, next to the market. Food will be available from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Grand Central Market and the movie begins at 5 p.m. Director Alexandra Cuerdo’s film focuses on how food is history, as well as the history of the Filipino people. Following the screening, Pulitzer-prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold will lead a panel discussion with chefs featured in the movie including Eggslut’s Alvin Cailan, Unit 120’s Isa Fabro and LASA’s Chase Valencia, as well as Cuerdo. Guests will also enjoy creations by Horse Thief restaurant chef Anthony Chin, who will serve lechon kawali (crispy deep fried pork belly), and pop-ups will offer street foods and new creations inspired by traditional Filipino recipes at the Grand Central Market. Providence Aussie dinner
Australia meets California on Saturday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. in a one-night collaboration at Providence. Melbourne’s top chef Dan Hunter and Los Angeles-based chef Michael Cimarusti will create a contemporary tasting menu combining Hunter’s influences from Brae, located in the countryside near Melbourne, with Cimarusti’s seafood-centric cuisine. CREAM Figueroa wants to send children with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases to camp this summer. Through Sunday, June 4, a portion of proceeds from sales of CREAM’s MDA PB&J cookies and Every Day is Your Birthday cookies, with CREAMfetti cookies, birthday cake ice cream and rainbow sprinkles, will help send a local youth to camp. Hollywood Bowl dining
James Beard-winning chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne are introducing new food and wine options for the 2017 Hollywood Bowl season. The California-inspired menus include over 17 offerings created by Goin, and wine and beer programs curated by Styne. Executive chef Jeff Rogers will oversee dining operations. Goin’s “grab-and-go” prepared foods include fresh breads, cheeses and snacks paired with Styne’s favorite wines. Additionally, a new snack bar on The Bowl’s Peppertree Lane features nachos, hot dogs, popcorn and soft pretzels, as well as chips, beer and sodas. Inside the venue, another stand offers a choice of hand-crafted pizzas, along with a barbecue kiosk. Rise Up! Café
The Patina Restaurant Group has expanded its culinary services with The California Endowment by opening the Rise Up! Café at the Center for Healthy Communities in Downtown Los Angeles. It’s a partnership with L.A. Kitchen, a local nonprofit that empowers, nourishes and engages the community through the use of donated food. Rise Up! Café is open to the public, serving breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The menu features American cuisine such as pastrami Reuben sandwiches with Swiss cheese and short rib sloppy Joes with crispy fried onions on potato rolls.
