The Beyond the Bell Youth Development Program and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Elementary Unit Office recently concluded the 2nd annual “26th Mile” training event at Dodger Stadium.
This year, 450 schools and over 30,000 students participated in the training program.
The “26th Mile” program is a seven-week cardiovascular fitness training and nutrition regimen for students 7-12 years old. The program educates students about the importance of staying healthy and active by walking and running, and informs them about healthy nutritional choices. The students received a training schedule in which they followed weekly exercises. Students at the after-school program walked or ran the equivalent of 25.2 miles during the program. Students ran the last mile at Dodger Stadium, resulting in a total of 26.2 miles, the same distance as a marathon.
