Authorities are scheduled to announce a $50,000 reward today for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for murdering a homeless woman in February on Olympic Boulevard.
A passerby found the woman at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 19 in the 2600 block of Olympic Boulevard, near Vermont Avenue. She was identified as Irma Cuevas, 62.
Police have no leads on why Cuevas was stabbed to death, said Det. Steven Katz, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Homicide Unit. Authorities hope the $50,000 reward, initiated by Councilman Gil Cedillo’s Office, will lead them to a suspect.
“We are looking for help,” Katz said. “Someone noticed her and called police, but we are looking for someone to help us with why she was stabbed and by whom.”
Katz said Cuevas frequented the neighborhood where she was killed and had been homeless for a significant period of time. The murder occurred in the 1st Council District in a neighborhood patrolled by the LAPD’s Olympic Division.
Katz said there is no evidence connecting Cuevas’ murder with any other crimes. Detectives with the West Bureau Homicide Unit are also still investigating the murder of another homeless woman that occurred in early 2015 near Wilshire and Crenshaw Boul-evards. In that incident, which occurred on Feb. 28, 2015, two pedestrians noticed a female victim unconscious on a bus bench and alerted personnel at a nearby fire station. Paramedics determined the 41-year-old woman was deceased. Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office investigators determined the victim, Najat Pennell, 41, had been stabbed to death. Police believe Pennell was murdered overnight between Feb. 27, 2015 and Feb. 28, 2015. Pennell was known to stay in the neighborhood.
“We can’t say there is a direct link, other than they were both homeless,” Katz said. “We are keeping our eyes open and are definitely open to any information that the public can provide.”
Anyone with information about either murder is asked to call West Bureau Homicide Unit investigators at (213)382-9470.
