The Los Angeles Zoo has received accreditation for the next five years from the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s (AZA) independent Accreditation Commission. The accreditation was announced following a hearing held by the association in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 28.

“By meeting the highest standards, the Los Angeles Zoo is regarded as among the world’s best zoos and aquariums,” said AZA president and CEO Dan Ashe. “The Los Angeles Zoo is a proven leader in the care and conservation of wildlife, and in inspiring people to take action to protect the natural world.”

To receive accreditation, the zoo underwent a review to ensure it has met and will continue to meet rising standards in animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to complete the accreditation process every five years as a prerequisite for membership in the association. The zoo has been an accredited AZA emember since 1979.

The accreditation process includes a meticulous on-site inspection by zoo and aquarium professionals. The inspection team observes all aspects of the institution’s operation, including animal care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; veterinary programs; financial stability; risk management; and visitor services. The AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission also interviews zoo and aquarium administrators.
