Sixteen cities nationwide will participate in this year’s City Nature Challenge, which runs from April 14 at 12:01 a.m. in each time zone through April 18 at 11:59 p.m.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County launched the challenge last year with San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences.
The friendly competition calls on current and aspiring citizen scientists, nature and science fans, and people of all ages and science backgrounds to observe and submit pictures of plants, animals and fungi using the free app iNaturalist.
The event coincides with National Citizen Science Day on April 15. Results will be announced on Earth Day, April 22.
Speakers include Lori Bettison-Varga, the museum’s president and director; Mark Ridley-Thomas, L.A. County Supervisor, 2nd District; and the museum’s urban nature scientists.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is located at 900 Exposition Blvd. For information, visit nhm.org/citynaturechallenge.
