Two suspects were arrested early Tuesday morning for a street robbery in West Hollywood after deputies located the vehicle they were driving near Santa Monica Boulevard and Kings Road.
During a search for the suspects, deputies also pulled over a vehicle in which hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean was a passenger and detained him until they determined it was a case of mistaken identity.
The robbery occurred at approximately 12:48 a.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Hilldale Avenue. A male suspect approached two victims on foot and robbed them at gunpoint.
The suspect stole personal belongings including a wallet and bank card. The suspect also allegedly placed a handgun to the temple of one of the victims and pistol whipped him during the robbery.
The suspect entered the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle, which sped away. The victims called 911 and told authorities the suspects were in a gold or tan older model sedan with paper license plates, possibly a Toyota or Honda.
Deputies fanned out in the surrounding neighborhoods searching for the vehicle, and came across a tan 2002 Toyota sedan with Michigan license plates traveling on La Cienega near Santa Monica Boulevard. They followed the car to the 700 block of West Knoll Drive, where the driver pulled over.
Jean, the hip-hop artist, allegedly exited the front passenger seat as an unidentified woman exited the driver’s seat. Deputies detained Jean after he allegedly did not adhere to their requests to stay away from the trunk and keep his hands away from his pockets and waistband.
Jean was placed in handcuffs and deputies sat him in the back of a patrol car for approximately six minutes until they determined he was not the robbery suspect.
Det. Greg Boagni, with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, said two suspects matching the description given by witnesses were pulled over a short time later approximately four blocks from where Jean was pulled over. The vehicle was described by authorities as a 1995 tan/gold Acura with paper plates.
Police arrested a male passenger and female driver. They also recovered a handgun and items belonging to the robbery victims.
The male suspect was identified as Torrion Falconer, 26, of Lancaster, and the female driver was identified as Dejuan Hooper, 30, of Inglewood. Falconer was booked at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station for robbery, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and having a loaded firearm concealed in a vehicle. Hooper was booked for robbery and possession of a controlled substance. They were both held on $100,000 bail.
Boagni said the deputies erred on the side of safety in detaining Jean and the female driver until it was determined they were not the suspects. The robbery victims told deputies the gunman was wearing a hooded sweatshirt that was possibly gray and that the suspect may also have a red or grey bandana draped around his neck. Jean was wearing a dark-colored shirt and a red and blue bandana on his head.
After the incident, Jean went to social media to complain about the episode. The sheriff’s department issued a statement.
“It is unfortunate that Mr. Jean was detained for six minutes during this investigation, as he had no involvement whatsoever in this violent crime,” the statement read. “However, Los Angeles County deputy sheriffs are frequently required to make lawful detentions, under the strict parameters provided by law, in the interest of catching often dangerous and armed suspects in our communities and keeping the public safe. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is apologetic for any inconvenience this process caused Mr. Jean. We are grateful we were able to apprehend the robbery suspects and that no one was seriously injured.”
