Los Angeles Councilman David Ryu, 4th District, has granted $8,950 in discretionary funding to Project Angel Food to help refurbish the organization’s community gardens.
In 2010, Project Angel Food was given a plot at the Enrique Noguera Garden, located at 6023 Fountain Ave. The 600-square-foot garden plot has produced approximately 600 pounds of produce including kale, chard, collards, mustard, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini and winter squash.
Additionally, Project Angel Food grows produce in the Fountain Community Garden, located at 5620 Fountain Ave. Since Project Angel Food began cultivating at the Fountain Community Garden, 300 pounds of produce has been harvested.
Project Angel Food’s newest garden is the Madison Garden located at 1175 N. Madison Ave. Started last June, it is estimated that 500 pounds of kale, chard, collards, mustard, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini and winter squash has been produced using only a quarter of the allotted space.
Since its inception 27 years ago, Project Angel Food has provided more than 10.5 million free meals to people with critical illnesses and continues to prepare more than 10,000 meals per week. Project Angel Food has expanded the initial mission of serving people living with HIV/AIDS to include medically-tailored meals for men and women with cancer, kidney failure, congestive heart disease and diabetes. More than 98 percent of its clients live below the poverty line. For information visit angelfood.org.
