Police are searching for a “person of interest” in a hit-and-run collision last August that left a 42-year-old women critically injured.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. on Aug. 21 near the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Olympic Boulevard. Three vehicles were involved in a traffic accident, and the victim exited her car to speak with the occupants of the other vehicles.
As the victim leaned toward one of the vehicles, the driver sped away, dragging her in the street. The victim sustained a severe head injury and is still receiving medical care, said Det. Gilbert Esquibel, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division.
Investigating officers inspected the victim’s Toyota Camry and found there was an imprint of a license plate with the number 5TFY382 on the rear bumper. The vehicle was traced to an undisclosed address, but police have been unable to locate the owner. The license plate belongs to a Mazda Tribute owned by Rene Milton Guzman Jr., a man who is identified as the “person of interest.” Police have investigated leads but are continuing to publicize the incident and hope information will surface about the hit-and-run driver’s whereabouts.
“We are trying to track him down but he is not cooperating,” Esquibel said. “We haven’t been able to locate the vehicle.”
Investigators have been unable to move forward with the case because they have to prove the driver at the time of the hit and run was the vehicle owner. Esquibel said a “concerned citizen” has posted flyers in the surrounding neighborhood seeking information.
The detective added that the victim was a woman of Korean descent, but had no further information. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call West Traffic Division detectives at (213)473-0222. During weekends and off-hours, call the LAPD’s hotline at (877)LAPD247.
