One of the most feared pitchers in Major League Baseball history, Randy Johnson, has been named the winner of the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation Player Lifetime Achievement Award.

Johnson, also known as the “Big Unit” thanks to his nearly 7-foot frame, will be presented with the award at the “In the Spirit of the Game” fundraiser Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Johnson, currently in his second season as special assistant to Arizona Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall, played 22 years in the big leagues with the Montreal Expos, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

Johnson was named co-MVP of the Diamondbacks World Series Championship in 2001. He threw a three-hit shutout in game two against the Yankees, came back to pitch seven innings and earn the win in the do-or-die game in game six and then found himself pitching in relief in game seven and earning the victory.

Johnson was inducted into Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 2015, with 97.3 percent of the vote in his first year of eligibility. He is a five-time Cy Young Award winner, ranks second on the all-time Major League strikeout list with 4,875 and first among left-handers. As a 10-time All-Star, he won 303 games in his career, including a perfect game, and holds nearly every major career pitching record in Diamondbacks history.

A nine-time strikeout king and four-time earned run average champion, Johnson regularly clocked above 100 miles per hour during his playing career. On May 18, 2004, Johnson became the oldest pitcher in Major League history to throw a perfect game.

In addition to Johnson being saluted, Rachel Robinson, the wife of the late, great Jackie Robinson, will be honored with The Pioneer Award in celebration of the 70th anniversary of her husband breaking the color line in Major League Baseball when he started for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts will receive the Tommy Lasorda Managerial Award.
