A woman who was shot and wounded by police after pointing a gun at officers in the parking garage at the Hollywood and Highland center in December 2014 has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.
The defendant, Diamond Shirley Vargas, was convicted on one count of felony assault with a firearm. She was shot by police on Dec. 26, 2014 after being involved in an altercation with a female motorist and officers who responded to the scene.
The altercation occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the third floor of the underground parking structure. It is unclear what started the argument between Vargas and the unidentified motorist, but authorities said Vargas first pulled out a baseball bat and swung it at the victim.
When police arrived, the defendant pulled out a handgun and pointed it at officers, who fired and struck Vargas in the leg. She was taken to a hospital and later recovered from the gunshot wound. Vargas had prior convictions for assault and robbery, according to reports.
