Schiff was reelected by a 77.77 to 22.23 percent margin, defeating Republican candidate Lenore Solis of Atwater Village. He gathered with supporters at an election night party on Nov. 8 at the Burbank Bar & Grille. The 28th Congressional District stretches from West Hollywood to Pasadena.
Schiff thanked constituents for their support, and vowed to continue working on international, national and local issues. He vowed to work closely with other members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, as well as President-elect Donald Trump. Schiff addressed the results of the presidential election in a statement.
“After one of the most bitterly contested presidential races in history, we have one of the most unexpected results in history, and Donald Trump will soon become President of the United States. As a supporter of Secretary Clinton, this was a painful, even heartbreaking conclusion, but that is the way democracy works. We have a peaceful transition of power, and for those of us that got knocked down, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and live to fight another day,” Schiff said. “We also do everything we can to make the country successful with its new president, to find common ground when we can, to energetically oppose him when we must, but always to work for the common good. The country faces enormous challenges – both at home and abroad – and all Americans must now come together to lift up the country we all cherish. I remain a deep believer in this great nation and something President Bill Clinton once said, that ‘There is nothing wrong in America that cannot be cured by what is right in America.’ Let us draw on all that is right and good within us and build a better future for ourselves and our children.”
Schiff said previously that some of the biggest challenges facing the United States are conflict in Syria and the Middle East, and Russia’s aggression in the region and in the former territories of the Soviet Union. He also cited domestic issues such as improving the economy, creating more jobs, preserving Social Security and Medicare, and making health care more affordable. Locally, Schiff vowed to support public transportation projects such as a light rail line through West Hollywood, and the preservation of open space in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Schiff added that he values constituents’ input and hopes to hear more from residents in his new term and encouraged constituents to contact his office.
“I want to express my profound gratitude to my constituents for giving me another opportunity to serve them,” Schiff added. “I plan to continue championing the values of my constituents and make sure we don’t turn back the clock on the progress we made over the last eight years.”
