Police arrested a man early Thursday morning who allegedly vandalized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Oct. 26.
The man was identified as James Otis in media reports. Police took him into custody at his home at an undisclosed location in West Hollywood.
Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Aareon Jefferson confirmed an arrest had been made, but had no further details because the suspect was still being booked Thursday morning. He will likely face felony vandalism charges.
Otis posted an online video in which he admits to damaging Trump’s star at 6801 Hollywood Blvd., in front of the Hollywood and Highland complex. The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Oct. 26. The lettering and plaque on the star were removed and the surface was heavily damaged. The suspect used a sledgehammer and pick ax to commit the vandalism.
In the online post, Otis said he was going to hold a press conference on Thursday with his lawyer and planned to turn himself in to authorities afterwards. Police identified the suspect and took him into custody early Thursday morning before he held a press conference.
Repairs to the star began shortly after the incident. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the Walk of Fame, denounced the act of vandalism. Although repairs began as soon as possible, it will take several days before the materials used settle and the star could be polished and unveiled.
