The Original Farmers Market, corner of Third and Fairfax, is holding its 82nd annual “Fall Festival” on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16.
The free festival was created in 1934 to celebrate the harvest season and the opening that year of the Original Farmers Market. The tradition continues this year with the Market decorated for the harvest season, and entertainment and activities for all ages.
The Fall Festival runs throughout the day and will include a petting zoo with pigs, goats and bunnies; the “All-Alaskan Pig Races” featuring flat-track racing and hurdling; child-sized pedal-powered tractor pull competitions; and demonstrations by artisans including a pumpkin carver, wool spinner, wheat weaver and more. A highlight is the “no hands” pie-eating contest (pictured) sponsored by Du-par’s and hosted by the Fall Festival mascot, Brian the scarecrow.
The Fall Festival also features high-energy musical talent. The first day kicks off at 11 a.m. with the San Fernando Valley Banjo Band and closes with a performance by The Lucky Stars and their mix of upbeat swing and pre-rock country. Additional groups performing on Oct. 15 include the Have More Fun Stringband, The Walking Phoenixes and The SideWynders. Additionally, the Cowboy Ken & Navajo Ben Western Heritage Show will be held on Oct. 15, featuring Native American dance and songs, as well as cowboy tunes, stories and trick roping.
Music continues at 11 a.m. on Oct. 16 and includes performance by Jazz N’ Banjos, The Miners, Cow Bop, Tina Michelle & the Rhinestone Cowboys, The Get Down Boys featuring Scarlet Rivera, and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys.
Strolling musicians, trick ropers and a banjo and fiddle duo will perform throughout the weekend. The Original Farmers Market is located at 6333 W. Third St. For information, call (323)933-9211, or visit www.farmersmarketla.com.
