More than 80 percent of the students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are eligible to receive free or reduced-priced meals every school day.
To continue to meet the needs of the students, LAUSD continues to participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.
Household size and income criteria are used to determine a student’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits. Children from households with incomes at or below eligible levels may qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
Children who receive CAL Fresh, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments (KinGAP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation (FDPIR) benefits are automatically eligible for free meals, regardless of family household income. No meal application is necessary. The households will be notified of their status by the LAUSD’s Food Services Division. If a child was not listed on the eligibility notice, the household can contact the Food Services Division to have the benefits extended.
Children documented under the foster and/or migrant programs, documented as homeless and/or runaways are also automatically eligible for free meals.
Families can also submit meal applications by visiting www.myschoolapps.com. Applications can be submitted any time during the school year but can only be processed by the Food Services Division. At any time the income or situation of the household changes, families can contact Food Services Division to learn if they qualify for the program. For information, call (213)241-3185.
