Firefighters battled a blaze on Sept. 3 at a vacant residential property in the 900 block of Crescent Heights Boulevard that spread to a building on an adjoining property on Laurel Avenue. No injuries were reported.
The fire was reported at approximately 9:30 p.m., and firefighters found smoke and flames emanating from a garage at the rear of 912 N. Crescent Heights Blvd. The flames were extinguished in approximately 15 minutes, but the fire damaged a studio apartment at 911 Laurel Ave. The studio apartment was also vacant.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. No estimate of damage was available for the garage where the fire originated, but $5,000 in damage occurred at the studio apartment.
A woman who identified herself as the mother of an occupant of another residence on the Laurel Avenue property said homeless individuals had been staying in the vacant buildings on Crescent Heights Boulevard, which were scheduled for demolition. She declined to provide her name.
“We were extremely lucky,” she said. “The firemen did a fantastic job. They saved the building, and went above and beyond what I thought they would do.”
