The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents “CARtoons: Art of America’s Car Culture” running Saturday, July 16 through Jan. 2.
The exhibit focuses on CARtoons magazine, the longest-running publication dedicated to automotive cartooning. Produced in Los Angeles from 1959 to 1991, the magazine featured stories about hot rods, drag racing, muscle cars, makes and models from Mustangs to Corvettes, and imaginary and fantastic vehicles. CARtoons provided a spirited documentation of American car culture over three decades.
The exhibition presents original art by several regular CARtoons contributors, including Steve Austin, Fred Boatman, Joe Borer, Dave Deal, Nelson Dewey, Mike Dormer, Dennis Ellefson, Tom Foxmarnick, Bob Hardin, Hank Hinton, Shawn Kerri, Darrell Mayabb, Errol McCarthy, Pete Millar, Alex Niño, William Stout, George Trosley and Monte Wolverton. Using hand lettering, dry transfer typefaces, screentone, photography and a lively line, the masters of automotive cartooning brought to life recurring characters, inside jokes and crazy cars.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is located at 5905 Wilshire Blvd. For information, call (323)857-6000, or visit www.lacma.org.
