A suspect who stabbed a female victim on June 7 at an apartment building in the 600 block of South Berendo Street was shot and killed by the victim’s boyfriend.

The Los Angeles Police Department is treating the incident as a justifiable homicide. The suspect, Kevin Yoo, 29, is a known gang member and allegedly attacked the woman without provocation.

Det. Scott Masterson, with the LAPD’s West Bureau Homicide Unit, said Yoo’s motive for stabbing the unidentified female victim is unknown. Officers were called to the apartment building at approximately 5:25 p.m. and found Yoo suffering from a gunshot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female victim was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition and is recovering. Masterson said all three individuals live at the same apartment building where the stabbing and shooting occurred.

Yoo allegedly stabbed the victim in a parking garage as she was walking to a car where her boyfriend was waiting. After realizing what happened, the boyfriend armed himself with a handgun and chased the suspect. The boyfriend fired a warning shot before shooting Yoo. Masterson said the boyfriend legally owned the firearm.

Yoo had been charged in a pending case for kidnapping and was free on bail. Masterson described him as having an extensive criminal record. The case was forwarded to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for review, but no charges have been filed.
