Hollywood Hills residents are rejoicing this week after the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a motion by Councilman David Ryu, 4th District, to quiet sightseeing tour buses and their sound systems.

Los Angeles set new tourism records last year, leading to an increase in tour bus operations, Ryu said. After receiving an increasing number of complaints about the growing number of “open air” buses and their conduct, Ryu proposed the regulations to reduce noise in residential areas.

The motion requires operators of unenclosed buses to obtain a permit to operate in the city. The permit verifies their sound systems cannot be heard more than 50 feet away and exempts buses using headsets or headphones.

Leaders of area neighborhood councils said some tour bus operators abide by the law, but others ignore stop signs, let tourists go up to residents’ windows, operate late at night, double park on narrow roads and allow too much weight on the buses creating hazards and risking people’s safety.

“Our office will continue to advocate for the preservation of residential neighborhoods and exploring other ways to help residents and the tour bus industry coexist within state regulations,” Ryu said.
