“I Only Have Eyes For You-The Life and Lyrics of Al Dubin” opened on Friday, May 13 at the Montalban Theatre in Hollywood. The musical, produced by Corky Hale, features the songs of legendary 1930s lyricist Dubin. Pictured at opening night festivities are from left Valerie Perri, writer Jerry Leichtling, writer Arlene Sarner, actor Jared Gertner, director Kay Cole, actress Nikke Bohne and Hale. Gertner stars as Dubin, who wrote classics such as “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “About a Quarter to Nine,” “42nd Street,” “We’re in the Money” and ”Lullaby of Broadway.”
The show has it all – great singing, dancing and numerous costume and set changes, humor and touching moments. Gertner is outstanding as Dubin and Bohne as Dubin’s wife Helen has a melodic and rich voice. The period costumes are spot on, and the sets transport you from Broadway dressing rooms to Los Angeles housing in the 1930s.
The tap dancing train scene leaves you bouncing in your seat, and “Cab Calloway” and his dancers heat things up with a sultry number. Finally, the number by Gertner and Bohne, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” brought rousing applause from the audience. The Montalban Theatre is an intimate venue for the show. The musical runs through Sunday, June 12. Showtimes are 8 p.m., Wednesday through Friday; 2 and 8 p.m., Saturday; and 3 p.m., Sunday. Tickets start at $40.
