The Nederlander Organization and Hollywood Pantages Theatre have announced the nominees for the fifth annual Jerry Herman Awards on Sunday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Pantages Theatre.
The awards celebrate the achievement and excellence in high school musical theater in Los Angeles. KABC-7 reporter George Pennacchio will host the show. Presenters from Broadway, film and television include Corbin Bleu, Gregory Jbara, Jonathan Bennett, Obba Babatunde, Jason Graae and Patricia Ward Kelly.
This year’s recipient of the Ed Lester Lifetime Achievement Award is Los Angeles arts educator Stormy Sacks, who will receive the award from last year’s recipient, Suzanna Guzman. Representatives of four high schools will perform. They include the Archer School for Girls, performing a medley from “Spring Awakening”; Oaks Christian School, which will perform “We’ve Got Magic to Do” from “Pippin”; De Toledo High School, performing “Run, Freedom, Run” from “Urinetown,” and Village Christian School performing a medley from Disney’s “Mary Poppins.”
All schools participating in the awards show are allowed to send a leading man and leading lady to audition for panel of judges, who determine the winner of the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. Winners in the two awards categories will represent Los Angeles at The National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City, where they will participate in a workshop and compete for the coveted “Jimmy” Award. The award is named after the owner of Hollywood Pantages, James M. Nederlander.
Tickets are $25. Visit www.HollywoodPantages.com/herman-awards for more information.
