American DJ and radio personality Charlie Tuna passed away in his sleep on Feb. 19.
Flowers were placed on Tuna’s star, located at 1560 Vine St., on Feb. 29 by the Hollywood Historic Trust.
Tuna worked as a morning drive radio personality for more stations and formats than anyone in Los Angeles radio history.
Tuna hosted nationally syndicated radio shows since the early 1970s including the “Armed Forces Radio Network” for a 25-year, 6000-show run from 1971 to 1996.
In 1990, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Tuna by presenting him with a star on the Walk of Fame.
Tuna was voted one of the “Top 10 L.A. Radio Personalities of All Time” in 1997 by the Los Angeles Radio People readers.
In 2007 and 2013, Tuna was elected by his LARadio.com broadcast peers as one of the “Top 10 Los Angeles Radio Personalities.”
Fans remember him for the joy, laughter and love of music he brought to many throughout the world with his presence on the radio.
Throughout his career, he raised nearly $2.5 million for Children’s Hospital in L.A. with his annual “Tunathon.”
Memorial donations can be made to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
