The city of West Hollywood’s Lesbian Speakers Series continues with a new line-up in February, March and April.
“West Hollywood is renowned not only for its prominent gay male scene. Our city also has a strong, vibrant lesbian community,” said West Hollywood Councilmember John Duran. “Gay men will always be deeply indebted to our lesbian sisters for the heroic role they played during the AIDS epidemic. I am happy to have worked to bring forward this Lesbian Speakers Series as a tribute to our lesbian community.”
The Lesbian Speakers Series began Feb. 17 when it partnered with UnCabaret to present comedian Julie Goldman.
On Saturday, March 19 at 5 p.m., there will be a screening of “The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen,” a documentary about Angela Bowen, a black, lesbian, feminist activist, writer and professor.
On Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m., there will be a film screening and discussion of “Liz in September,” which is based on the classic lesbian play “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.”
The film stars Latina lesbian supermodel Patricia Velasquez and is directed by Fina Torres.
The event, presented in conjunction with the June Mazer Lesbian Archives and Wolfe Video, will feature a panel discussion with cast members from past productions of “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.”
On Wednesday, April 20, at 7 p.m., the Lesbian Speakers Series will present Sarah Schulman discussing her new book, “The Cosmopolitans.” Schulman is a professor at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York.
All events will be held in West Hollywood’s city council chambers/public meeting room at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.
Events are free, and validated parking is available at the parking structure adjacent to the library.
