The 31st annual marathon follows a “stadium to the sea” route that starts at Dodger Stadium and ends at the Santa Monica Pier. Temperatures are expected to reach highs near 80 degrees and race organizers are warning participants to stay hydrated. They are also taking steps to ensure runners do not experience heat-related problems.
Precautions include starting the marathon a 6:55 a.m. – a half-hour earlier than in previous years – and sending runners out in waves to limit crowding. Organizers will staff 22 aid stations along the route where runners can drink water and Gatorade. Air-conditioned “cooling buses” will be parked along the route and at the finish for runners who become over-heated. Runners can also stop at misting stations and receive cold towels and ice along the way.
The 26.2-mile route extends through Echo Park and Silver Lake on Sunset Boulevard before turning west on Hollywood Boulevard. Runners will pass landmarks like the Pantages Theatre and TCL Chinese Theatre, turn south on Orange Drive and west to Sunset Boulevard for the trip through West Hollywood.
West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Horvath said she is excited about the marathon passing through the city.
“We love the L.A. Marathon. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show the Sunset Strip to participants,” Horvath said. “It’s a great event that helps showcase our city.”
The route then makes its way to Beverly Hills before passing through Century City, Westwood and Santa Monica. Beverly Hills city officials will welcome the runners, who will pass by Beverly Hills City Hall and run along Rodeo Drive. The city is hosting a “cheer zone” for spectators at the intersection of Burton Way and Foothill Drive.
Molly Biddiscombe, a spokeswoman for the marathon’s organizer Conquer Endurance Group, said the L.A. Marathon is traditionally held in March. It was moved to Valentine’s Day to coincide with the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, which will be held Saturday in downtown Los Angeles.
For the trials, hundreds of the top runners from throughout the United States will run a looping course in downtown Los Angeles that starts and finishes at LA LIVE. The top three male and top three female finishers will earn spots on the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team and compete in the Olympics in August in Brazil. Numerous roads will be closed Sunday along the L.A. Marathon route. Streets will be re-opened on a rolling basis after the runners pass. For a list of closures and additional information about the marathon, visit lamarathon.com.
