A 32-year-old suspect who was the subject of a citywide police manhunt earlier this week for a series of crimes in December has been tied to a shooting on Dec. 29 in West Hollywood.

The suspect, Artyom Gasparyan, was shot by police Monday after he led them on a pursuit in which he drove the wrong way on an off-ramp to the Golden State Freeway in Sun Valley. The suspect crashed into a vehicle and jumped out of his car armed with a handgun before being shot by police. He remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, LAPD spokesman Matthew Ludwig said.

Authorities linked Gasparyan to the shooting in West Hollywood after identifying a vehicle he used and recognizing his method of operation, said Sgt. Richard Bowman with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station. The suspect allegedly shot an unidentified restaurant deliveryman shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 29 in the 1000 block of Kings Road.

The victim was struck multiple times in the lower torso. He was treated at a hospital and later released and is now recovering. The motive for the shooting appears to be robbery, but the incident is still under investigation.

Det. Dan Myers, with the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, said a team of detectives worked “around the clock” to find Gasparyan. An undercover detective found him at an auto repair business in Sun Valley, leading to the pursuit and officer-involved shooting on the 5 Freeway at Glenoaks Boulevard.

Gasparyan was wanted for a series of robberies, carjackings and other crimes that began on Dec. 6 with a shooting that injured a man in northeast Los Angeles. Gasparyan also allegedly shot and wounded two men in Burbank on Dec. 9, and shot and killed an unidentified victim in Panorama City on Dec. 30.

On Jan. 1, an off-duty officer recognized a Volkswagen on the Century (105) Freeway as being wanted in connection with the crime spree. The officer followed the Volkswagen and notified fellow officers who joined the pursuit. When the Volkswagen stopped in South Los Angeles, a passenger and an accomplice, later identified as Daniel Ramirez, 25, jumped out of the car and carjacked another driver at gunpoint. Gasparyan, who is believed to have been driving the Volkswagen, fled the scene and eluded police. Officers pursued the vehicle stolen at gunpoint by Ramirez to a residence in Long Beach, where the suspect forced entry into a home, shot two people and stabbed another before taking his own life.

Myers added that investigators continued their search for Gasparyan until they found him in Sun Valley on Monday. Police recovered a gun at the scene that they believe was used in the crimes. He will likely face robbery, attempted murder and murder charges.
