Members of the public can join KTLA’s Wendy Burch and the Alliance for Women in Media Southern California for a community service project on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.
Participants will help box food and raise awareness for the food bank, which is experiencing an increased demand for volunteers and donations. Volunteers wil sort, inspect and repackage donated food items for people in need.
“Donating my time at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is just one small way to help balance the scale,” Burch said.
With the rising cost of living, even families with two incomes often can’t make ends meet or put enough food on the table, according to the food bank. Many times, low-income seniors can’t afford to pay for bills and food, so they make the difficult choice to go hungry to pay for medicine or utilities.
An estimated 16 percent of Los Angeles County residents are considered food insecure, which means 1.7 million people struggle to obtain enough food each week. The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank is located at 1734 E. 41st St. Visit www.awmsocal.org/events or www.lafoodbank.org/donate.
