The Heritage Square Museum has announced plans to continue its preservation and restoration of the museum’s historical buildings as well as educational programs.
The museum, located at 3800 Homer St. in Northeast Los Angeles, is an open-air architecture museum featuring a collection of houses from the Victorian era.
The museum completed several large-scale restoration projects in 2015. To preserve the museum’s Ford House and Garden, the museum replaced the roof, restored the front door and repaired and repainted the interior and exterior windows of the entire structure. Additionally, the Perry House front exterior was painted and the upstairs front balcony was painstakingly taken apart and its original pieces numbered, restored and reassembled onsite.
All work was completed by master craftsmen to safeguard period accuracy and quality of materials used. Donations, volunteer hours and a grant from the Parsons Foundation made the projects possible.
The museum hopes to find funding for several anticipated projects in the new year.
The museum plans to replace the roof of the Palms Depot and begin interior restoration work on the second floor of the Perry House, where it is hoped the Justin Gershuny Memorial Library will be housed in 2017.
The library will give students access to the museum’s archives, rare books, art and primary source documents.
The master gardeners at Heritage Square are offering a series of free gardening classes at the Ford Garden starting Jan. 23. Each class features hands-on activities and an emphasis on Victorian organic gardening. For information, visit www.heritagesquare.org.
