The 13th annual Rhapsody Gala funding the work of YWCA Greater Los Angeles (YWCA GLA) will be held Friday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
“[It will be an] an evening [recognizing] the evolution of powerful institutions and individuals within America’s minority communities who are bringing hope to young people whose childhoods were empty of hope,” said Faye Washington, YWCA GLA president and CEO.
YWCA GLA this year will honor Debra L. Lee, CEO of BET Networks; Tracy Underwood, national manager of Toyota’s social impact division; and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, 2nd District. The event’s co-chairs include YWCA GLA’s ambassador Kathy Ireland, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and Fabian Wesson, chair of the California Science Center and Exposition Park. Nischelle Turner, of “Entertainment Tonight,” will serve as master of ceremonies.
The gala is the organization’s main fundraising event and helps fund YWCA GLA assistance for the city’s most at-risk population, emancipated foster youth and underserved individuals. Proceeds will fund the YWCA GLA Workforce/Youth Development, Sexual Assault Crisis Services, Child Development, and Senior Services programs
“Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas is being honored with the Man of the Year Award to salute his programs of advancement for our least privileged children,” Washington added. “It symbolizes his efforts to provide through legislation and through personal intervention.”
