The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will begin a reconfiguration of traffic lanes near Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue on Friday, Nov. 6 at 9 p.m. The project is anticipated to be completed on Monday, Nov. 9 at 6 a.m.

The work precedes the first major station construction for the Metro Purple Line Extension Project. Metro’s contractor Skanska, Traylor, Shea will install k-rails and fencing around the north three lanes of Wilshire Boulevard between Mansfield Avenue and Detroit Street. Work will consist of street re-striping, traffic signal reconfiguration and installation of k-rails and fencing. Parking also will be eliminated on Wilshire Boulevard between Mansfield Avenue and Detroit Street.

The construction will reduce Wilshire Boulevard from three lanes in each direction to two lanes in each direction from Highland Avenue to Cloverdale Avenue – approximately five blocks. Fewer lanes will be in use for the duration of pile installation work needed to create a station box perimeter, which is expected to last six to eight months.

Traffic delays are anticipated. The peak-hour dedicated curb lanes for Metro Rapid buses will be eliminated, requiring buses to merge into regular traffic lanes. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation will deploy traffic control officers at intersections at the beginning of the construction to help motorists adjust to the new configuration.

Access for pedestrians will be maintained outside of the construction zone, and access for emergency responders will be maintained. Construction may result in changes to bus stop locations.
