I always encourage customers to try wines from around the world as a way to explore unfamiliar varietals, expand the palate and grow one’s knowledge of wine and wine-growing regions, all of which is enjoyable and exciting.
A great wine shop is usually able to help you select a wine based on your preferences and the notes, flavors and finishes you enjoy. For wines that are lesser known, I often suggest value purchases and one that I recommend repeatedly is the organic Honoro Vera Monastrell from Spain.
The Monastell grape, also known as Mourvèdre in France, produces dark, inky black fruit driven wines, a principal component of Rhône wines, such as Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Old-world wine, or wine from historical wine growing regions such as France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, is usually more “food friendly,” has subdued fruit notes, and more noticeable earthy characteristics. The Honoro Vera Monastrell is no different. The vines are planted on organic vineyards, without irrigation, which leads to low-yielding vines and high quality grapes. Dark ruby in color, this approachable wine has notes of blackberry, cherry, white pepper and herbs. It also has rich body, subtle spice and a lively finish.
This Monastrell goes perfectly with red meat or game, blue and other strong cheeses and earthy mushroom-based sauces. However, for an adventurous pairing, try it with a sweet nougat stuffed crepe with chocolate and a blackberry sauce.
