Waltons Weekend
Will Geer played Grandpa Walton on the acclaimed 1970s television show, “The Waltons”, and Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum is hosting a reunion weekend with some of the show’s cast members for the public to enjoy. Participants can meet Olivia, Elizabeth, Jim Bob, Erin, Mary Ellen and Ben Walton, and enjoy a Waltons-themed dinner and film on Friday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Mountain Mermaid in Topanga. On Saturday, Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants can enjoy a tour of Theatricum Botanicum and its garden before a presentation of the Will Geer Humanitarian Award and an interactive discussion with members of The Waltons cast. The theatricum’s theater company will perform “To Kill A Mockingbird” at 3:30 p.m., and a production of “Green Grow the Lilacs” will be held at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m., participants can enjoy a bus tour to The Waltons film set at the Warner Brothers Ranch in Burbank, while refreshments are served and episodes of the family television show play during the ride. Vive La France Wine Dinner
Tam O’Shanter is hosting a four-course wine dinner on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m., with French wines from multiple regions in France served including 2012 Baron de Rothschild, Saint Emilion, Bordeaux; 2012 Domaine de La Perrière, Sancerre, Loire Valley; 2013 Têtu Grenache, Cotes de Catalanes, Maury; and La Montecchia, Fior D’ Arancio Moscato, DOCG, Veneto. Street Food and Boozy Cocktails
The Patina Group will turn an area in Descanso Gardens into an adult summer camp on Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. Guests can make friendship bracelets and hike and enjoy hearty Mexican street food and adult snow cones. Flavors include apple-tini, margarita, piña colada and sangria. The snow cone cart also serves regular cones in bubble gum, honeydew melon, lime and tiger’s blood flavors. The new “Oak Woodland” area will offer craft beers from Golden Road Brewing, and DJ The Flashdance will spin music. A Patina Group taco stand will offer street tacos with fresh lime, cilantro, onion and a choice of red or green salsa. Diners may also enjoy grilled street corn with aioli, cotija cheese, chile and lemon juice. Mulitas are offered with carne asada, grilled chicken or portobello mushrooms. Malibu Country Mart Summer Block Party
Malibu Country Mart is holding its 3rd annual Summer Block Party on Sunday, Aug. 16 from noon to 3 p.m. The mart will be transformed into a free street fair, with family activities and carnival treats. Scrappy Hour at Wildcraft
The Italian tavern Wildcraft, in Culver City, is offering a special menu and drinks. Executive chef Bryant Wigger and chef/partner Tin Vuong aim to reduce waste by utilizing leftover herbs abd vegetables to flavor cocktails, priced at $7 during happy hour. The drinks include Italian Stallions with a lemon lime spice blend made from leftover zest. Riptides are made with muddled Fresno chili tops, and Sweet Peas are made with sugar snap pea vodka infused with pea shells. Chef Wigger serves barbecue lamb baby back ribs made with an overlooked part of the lamb, and his malfatti pasta is made with unused ends of dough. He also serves Brussels sprout chips made from the discarded outer leaves of the vegetable that are flash fried crispy and are slightly salty. The happy hour menu is available Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The salted caramel mousse pies have chocolate ganache filling and are topped with light whipped cream and homemade caramel popcorn. Herringbone Anchors in Santa Monica
The acclaimed ocean-to-table concept restaurant Herringbone has opened under the direction of chef de cuisine Aaron Mitrano. Inspired by The Taste alum chef Brian Malarkey’s passion for expertly crafted and whimsical coastal cuisine, the restaurant will feature dishes that evoke his signature “Fish Meats Field” philosophy. The menu showcases sustainable, responsibly-sourced ingredients from the ocean, ranches and fields. An extensive selection of fresh seafood is offered ranging from Pacific-bred oysters and prawns to octopus and uni. The charcuterie includes cold and hot plates. Red O
Rick Bayless’ newest Red O restaurant is located next door to The Ivy by the Shore and the Santa Monica Pier. Diners can sit at a table by the window for people watching along Ocean Avenue and views of the Pacific Ocean. The setting is more “beach casual” than his West Hollywood restaurant on Melrose Avenue. The Mexican-inspired steakhouse serves chunky guacamole; braised short rib tacos; fresh corn and goat cheese tamales; ahi tuna tostaditas; 12-ounce carne asada brava; wood grilled prime New York strip with roasted tomato salsa huevona, sweet corn tamales and grilled knob onions; and 8-ounce filet mignon with chipotle crema and cotija mashed yukon gold potatoes. Guests can add a half Maine lobster tail for an additional cost. Diners who love lamb will enjoy the wood grilled lamb mole negro. The prix fixe menu is $65 per person, with an additional $15 for wine pairing. Desserts include cuatro leches cake topped with fresh berries and whipped cream.
