The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is warning residents about door-to-door sales scams targeting seniors and other residents that often become more prevalent during warm summer weather.
Scam artists posing as salespeople knock on doors and try to convince homeowners that they need air conditioning ducts cleaned, windows replaced or other repairs. Often times the prices offered are below what legitimate contractors would charge.
One signal that should raise concern is when a salesperson states that the prices are low because they have supplies left over from another project. The salesperson may also ask for money up front, or refuse to provide a written estimate, which should also raise concern.
Residents who believe they are a victim of a scam are instructed to call the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs at (800)593-8222, or visit www.dcba.lacounty.gov. For information on scams, visit www.da.lacounty.gov.
