A motorist was killed in a three-vehicle collision early Monday morning that forced authorities to close the eastbound lanes of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway at La Brea Avenue.

California Highway Patrol officer Chris Baldonado said the collision occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m. The driver of a 1999 Mazda Miata who was entering the freeway from La Brea Avenue lost control and traveled over a median separating the onramp and the main lanes of the freeway. The driver of a 1999 Toyota Camry traveling eastbound struck the Miata, and both vehicles came to rest in freeway lanes.

Baldonado said approximately two minutes later, the driver of a 2013 Toyota FR-S struck the two vehicles, killing the driver of the Camry. The victim was described as a 64-year-old man from Culver City. His name was withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

No other injuries were reported. The cause of the collision is under investigation, Baldonado said. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor, he added, and it is unclear if rain or water on the roadway was a contributing factor.

Baldonado said the collision closed all eastbound lanes of the freeway, although motorists were rerouted around the site via a freeway access road that runs parallel to lanes. The freeway reopened at 7 a.m.
