Congressman Ted Lieu (D-Los Angeles) introduced the Advocating for Homeless Veterans Act to reauthorize the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Advisory Committee on Homeless Veterans through Dec. 31, 2020.
The Advisory Committee was created in 2001 by then-House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Chris Smith (R-NJ) to review the VA’s efforts to serve homeless veterans and provide the department with recommendations.
“No woman or man who has fought for their country in uniform should ever have to fight for a roof over their heads or food on their tables,” Lieu said. “As the Obama Administration works towards ending veteran homelessness, Congress needs to ensure the VA has every tool at its disposal to achieve and maintain that goal.”
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Vietnam Veterans of America, Military Officers Association of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Association of County Veteran Service Officers and Military Order of the Purple Heart all endorsed the proposal.
