The Coca-Cola Company, Special Olympics USA, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and First Book recently donated a collection of 50 books to the Adaptive Physical Education Department of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
The books, which focus on overcoming obstacles, were presented during a Special Olympics USA reception at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The curated collection features titles highlighting the values of the games, including diversity, inclusion, overcoming adversity, athletic excellence, and the importance of hard work and persistence in reaching goals.
“Every day, in communities across the country and around the world, we see the critical need to further our human understanding and embrace the gifts each of us brings,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “We hope the donation of this collection of inclusive stories will further advance our collective efforts to help all children recognize and reach their full potential.”
LAUSD’s Adaptive Physical Education Department works with more than 200 schools to provide physical education and athletic opportunities to students with disabilities.
The collection, curated by First Book and the AFT, furthers the long-term partners’ shared commitment to diversity and inclusion. Together, the organizations have distributed more than three million new books to children throughout the country, including many titles from First Book’s Stories for All Project.
