An adult male defendant and a juvenile have been charged with murder in the slayings of two cousins in Koreatown earlier this month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Roberto Menjivar, 39, and Jonathan Roberto Orozco, 16, are charged with two counts of murder, with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Both defendants, who are suspected associates of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, are accused of shooting and killing Eleazar Lico and his cousin, Aurelio Lico, on June 1 in the 3000 block of West Leeward Avenue, located south of Wilshire Boulevard and east of Vermont Ave.
Deputy District Attorney David Ayvazian, of the Hardcore Gang Division, said the victims became involved in a fight with Menjivar following a dispute. Orozco then allegedly shot Eleazar Lico.
The victims ran away, but Aurelio Lico tripped and fell, the prosecutor said. Orozco caught up to Aurelio Lico and allegedly shot him in the head. Both Eleazar and Aurelio died a short time later.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded and arrested Menjivar near the scene. Orozco was arrested the following day at an undisclosed location.
Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Menjivar. Because Orozco is under the age of 18, he faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison.
