The City of West Hollywood is preparing for major utility construction work during the summer at Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards. The Sunset La Cienega Project, which occupies the southwest and southeast corners of Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards, will implement many public benefits and utility upgrades as part of the project’s Development Agreement.
The Sunset Boulevard utility construction work will take place in three phases from early July 2015 to mid-August 2015. Construction crews will be trenching across Sunset Boulevard in these phases, in order to keep the roadway open to through traffic at all times. This work will involve around-the-clock excavation and installation of conduit for the undergrounding of overhead power lines.
The La Cienega Boulevard utility construction work will take place in one phase from August 2015 to late September 2015. Construction will require the full closure of La Cienega Boulevard between Fountain Avenue and Sunset Boulevard for several weeks. Due to La Cienega Boulevard’s proximity to hotels and residences, construction work will only be done during daytime hours. Continuous local access will be provided for the Sunset Marquis hotel and for residential buildings located on La Cienega Boulevard. La Cienega Boulevard will remain open south of Fountain Avenue.
The City of West Hollywood is coordinating with the City and County of Los Angeles, other partner agencies, and the developer to minimize the impacts of this utility construction work. Throughout the construction work, the City’s priorities are safety for the public and for construction workers, neighborhood livability, and traffic flow.
The City has initiated a citywide outreach effort to engage and inform businesses, residents, and community members about the construction work. This includes a citywide mailing. The Sunset La Cienega Project Team has conducted extensive outreach, as well.
Throughout the utility construction work, businesses on the world-famous Sunset Strip will be open as usual. Ultimately, the construction will include many street improvements that will improve long-term traffic flow and will result in intersection improvements. The City appreciates the community’s patience during construction at Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards.
