Walking into the historic Pantages Theatre, with its plush red staircases and gilded art deco molding, instantly sets the mood for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary “Phantom of the Opera”. In fact, “Phantom’s” fabled chandelier fits seamlessly with the theatre’s décor. This production of “Phantom”, produced by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, includes exciting new special effects, a unique set design and beautiful costumes. I have seen several productions of this show, and the effects and staging of this incarnation are unrivaled and completely inventive. I especially loved watching Christine and the Phantom descend into the Phantom’s lair via boat.
The thrilling story comes alive with the beloved, classic score, which includes songs like “The Phantom of the Opera” — an electrifying combination of rock n’ roll and opera – and the beautiful melodies of “Music of the Night,” “Think of Me,” and “All I Ask of You”. Watching the conductor passionately swing his baton as he directs the orchestra is a show unto itself.
The grandeur of the costumes, the staging, and the music along with the eerie mystique of the story makes for a memorable evening at the theatre and beckons back to the splendor of theatre in eras past.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is showing at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre now through August 2. Tickets are available at hollywoodpantages.com
