A 31-year-old suspect has been charged with mayhem for allegedly biting a police officer in Koreatown on Monday after authorities approached him for harassing a pedestrian and being under the influence.
Lt. Marco Muñoz, of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division, identified the suspect as Steven Whinnie, a resident of Los Angeles. Muñoz said a pedestrian near the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue flagged down officers in a patrol car at approximately 9 p.m., and told them a man, later identified as Whinnie, was following him.
When officers approached the suspect, a confrontation ensued, and one of the officers was bitten on the bicep. A second officer sustained a shoulder injury during the altercation. Both officers received medical treatment and were released.
Whinnie was arrested and booked for mayhem, a felony under the California Penal Code. Muñoz said the investigation is ongoing, and he did not know whether the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Whinnie is being held on $150,000 bail pending formal criminal charges being filed.
