The Hollywood Property Owners Alliance (HPOA), which oversees the Hollywood Entertainment District Business Improvement District, has provided approximately $100,000 in new cameras and equipment to upgrade a police surveillance system in Hollywood.

The equipment was provided to update a surveillance camera system that has been in place at nine locations along Hollywood Boulevard and in the surrounding area since 2005. Installation of the camera equipment was completed in December.

Joseph Mariani, assistant executive director of the HPOA, said the equipment was purchased through the HPOA’s security budget, which comes from assessments collected from businesses in the Hollywood Entertainment District. It included digital wireless cameras, monitors and related electronic equipment.

“The system was antiquated. Things have come a long way in 10 years,” Mariani said. “I think it’s just a continuation of the great work the LAPD has been trying to do in Hollywood, and the property owners association’s support.”

The cameras are located at Hollywood and Vine, Hollywood and Cahuenga, Hollywood and Whitley, Hollywood and Highland, Hollywood and Sycamore, Hollywood and Gower, Yucca and Cahuenga, Selma and Schrader, and Sunset and Cahuenga. They provide a live video feed to the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, where officers monitor activity.

Mariani said the new equipment outputs a clearer picture, especially at night, providing an additional tool for police.

“Whether they are looking at incidents or it’s helping detectives or used during special events in Hollywood, we want to do anything we can to help support their efforts,” Mariani added.
